Wellborn Windows & Doors: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide
We keep Wellborn-compatible window and door hardware in stock and can typically have a replacement sash, balance, lock set, hinge, or sweep installed same-week for most Jacksonville homes. An installed window or door hardware swap usually runs $150 – $750 depending on the part, while a full window or door replacement falls between $4,500 and $15,000 in the Jacksonville market. Most Wellborn owners call us after they notice a window that won’t stay up, a door that won’t latch cleanly, or air bleeding through a seal that used to hold tight.
Wellborn is better known in Jacksonville for cabinets, but their window and door lines get installed in a fair number of kitchens, baths, and additions around Mandarin, Avondale, and San Marco. The parts are well-built, and most failures we see come from Florida humidity working on the weatherstripping, or years of salt air near the coast. The good news is that Wellborn uses fairly standard hardware across their lines, which means the right part usually exists and we can match it without waiting on a custom order.
One note before we go further: Elmstead Remodeling Jacksonville is an independent service provider. We install and repair Wellborn windows and doors, but we’re not a Wellborn dealer or affiliate.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn’s window and door offerings generally fall into a few recognizable series, and the hardware differs more by era than by line name. Older Wellborn double-hungs from the mid-2000s use a spiral balance system that threads into the jamb, while recent production runs use a block-and-tackle balance that’s quieter and easier to service. For doors, the hinge pattern and bore spacing on Wellborn cabinet-adjacent door hardware (pantry doors, laundry pass-throughs, built-in closet doors) tends to follow a 2-3/8″ backset, but we have seen 2-3/4″ on deeper installations in Avondale-era bungalows.
To identify your part, look for a small foil label on the top edge of the sash or the hinge side of the door frame. It carries a manufacturing code that includes the series and year. If the label is gone (common after years of Jacksonville humidity), take two measurements: the visible glass width and the wall-to-wall jamb depth. Grabbing those two numbers before you call saves a round of questions and gets the right part on the truck the first time.
For most Wellborn hardware, a genuine OEM part runs 20 – 40% more than a quality aftermarket equivalent, and the honest difference is often just packaging and a logo stamp. Where it matters (balance systems, multi-point door locks), we recommend OEM because the tolerances are tighter. Where it doesn’t (bumpers, sweeps, basic cam locks), a good aftermarket part saves real money with no downside.
If you’re shopping around, we also stock compatible parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone installations, which helps when a kitchen or bath has mixed-brand windows and doors.

Signs Your Wellborn Windows & Doors Is Failing
- The sash drops or slams shut. This almost always means a balance has lost tension or snapped. On Wellborn double-hungs, the balance sits inside the jamb channel and can be replaced without pulling the whole window.
- You can feel air or see daylight through the seal. Weatherstripping compresses over time, especially in Florida’s heat-and-humidity cycle. A new kerf-in seal usually restores the tight fit and cuts the AC cost.
- The lock set wiggles or won’t throw. On Wellborn doors, the multi-point lock rods can drift out of alignment if the door slab settles even a quarter-inch. It’s often a lube-and-realign fix, but a bent rod needs replacement.
- The door drags or sticks in one corner. Hinges on Wellborn doors wear elliptically when they carry a heavy panel. If you see a small gap at the top hinge when the door is closed, that hinge has begun to sag.
- The sweep is shredded or missing along the bottom edge. Jacksonville’s afternoon thunderstorms, especially in Riverside and Murray Hill, push standing water against door sweeps so even well-installed sweeps fail a couple of years earlier than they would further inland.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A hardware-level repair on a Wellborn window or door in Jacksonville generally runs $150 – $750 installed. That range covers parts and labor, and the spread depends mostly on the part itself: a replacement balance runs on the lower end, and a full multi-point lock set on a Wellborn entry door runs higher.
- Window balance replacement: $150 – $300 per window
- Sash lock or latch replacement: $100 – $200 per unit
- Weatherstripping kit (per window or door): $120 – $350 installed
- Hinge replacement on a Wellborn door: $180 – $400 per door
- Full multi-point lock set replacement: $350 – $750 per door
- Full window replacement (Wellborn-compatible): $4,500 – $15,000 per home, depending on count and size
Every one of those numbers is a written, fixed price before we start. We write the part name and part number on the estimate, which means no allowance line items that quietly grow. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the workmanship on every parts repair too. If something we touched isn’t right a year later, we come back and make it right at no charge.
For full window or door replacement projects in Jacksonville, the range shifts with the age of the home. A 1950s bungalow in Avondale with original frames often needs rough-opening correction before a new Wellborn-compatible unit can sit square, while a newer home in Nocatee is usually a straight swap. We name that line item on the written estimate before we start, so there’s no surprise on day three.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a couple of things a Wellborn owner can safely check before calling. Is the track clean? Jacksonville’s oak pollen and construction dust gum up window channels faster than most people expect, and a wiped-down track sometimes is the whole fix. Is the screw loose at the lock keep? A 5-minute tightening job is within reach for most homeowners.
Beyond that, we’d rather you call us. Window balances sit under constant spring tension, and a slipped spiral balance can snap back hard enough to send the tool or the part into the glass. Multi-point door locks have internal rods that don’t tolerate being forced, and a bent rod inside a Wellborn door means removing the slab and splitting the edge channel. That’s a job for someone who has done it twice this week, not twice ever.
If you’re in Jacksonville and you’ve got a Wellborn window or door that’s fighting you, call (904) 643-6243 and tell whoever answers what the symptom is. We’ll ask for the two measurements mentioned above and give you a written price before we ever set a boot in the house. Name the material, name the day, name the price, then there is nothing left to wonder about.
FAQs

A well-maintained Wellborn window or door should last 20 – 25 years in Jacksonville’s climate before the frame or hardware gives out, though coastal salt air can pull that down by a few years. Weatherstripping and sweeps are the exceptions and typically need replacement every 5 – 7 years.
Generally no; a spiral balance that has lost tension cannot be re-tensioned reliably, and a block-and-tackle balance is a sealed unit. Replacement is the honest fix, and the part cost is low enough that rebuilding rarely makes sense. Call (904) 643-6243 for a written price on your specific window.
A single balance, lock, or sweep replacement takes 45 – 90 minutes once we’re on-site, and we schedule it so you’re not waiting all day. A full multi-point door lock replacement can take 2 – 3 hours because the door slab comes off and gets re-hung and re-aligned.
We keep the most common Wellborn balances, cam locks, hinges, and weatherstripping profiles on our trucks, and for less common parts our Jacksonville suppliers typically have them within a few days. If your part is truly out of production, we’ll source a matching aftermarket equivalent and show you the spec before ordering.
