Barrette Windows & Doors: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide

We install and replace Barrette-compatible window and door hardware across Jacksonville, and an owner with a failing part is usually looking at $250–$900 installed, depending on what failed and whether it’s a window or a door. Most Barrette parts we replace are discovered the hard way: a crank handle that spins without moving the sash, a patio door that suddenly needs two hands to slide, or a lock that no longer catches in a Jacksonville afternoon storm. If you’re holding a broken part in your hand or staring at a window that won’t stay open, this page tells you what you need to know before you call.

Elmstead Remodeling Jacksonville is an independent contractor, not affiliated with Barrette. We match and install parts that work with Barrette products.

Which Barrette Models This Applies To

A remodeled staircase with wood treads and a slim metal railing

Barrette windows and doors show up in older Florida homes under a few names: Barrette, Barrette Outdoor Living (mostly fencing and rail systems), and Barrette vinyl window lines that were sold through building supply yards in the Southeast. The confusion is real, and it matters because not every Barrette part fits every Barrette product. A window balance from a single-hung vinyl unit made in 2005 is not the same as one from a 2015 casement. The part number on the frame, usually stamped on a white label on the inside track or hinge side, is the fastest way we match it.

For doors, the common failure points are the roller assemblies and the latch hardware. Barrette sliding patio doors use two roller styles depending on the year: a stamped steel bracket with an adjustable 1-1/4” wheel, or a pressed plastic housing with a fixed 7/8” wheel. Mixing those two up means the door either binds or drops. When we can source an OEM part, we do. When the OEM part is discontinued, which happens more often on windows than doors, we fit a quality aftermarket equivalent and tell you up front that it’s aftermarket and why. Jacksonville humidity accelerates corrosion on steel rollers, so we lean toward stainless or nylon-wheel replacements even when the original was cheaper steel.

Signs Your Barrette Windows & Doors Is Failing

  • The sash drops when you let go. That’s a failed block-and-tackle balance, the most common Barrette window failure we see in Jacksonville. The nylon cord inside the balance frays over time, especially in rooms that get full sun exposure on the south and west sides of the house.
  • The sliding door sounds like it’s dragging gravel. Worn rollers, plus ten years of St. Johns County sand tracked into the track. The rollers flatten on one side, then the door sits metal-on-metal. Bending down and cleaning the track will quiet it for a week, but the roller is already done.
  • The crank handle turns but the window doesn’t move. On casement windows, the gear inside the operator strips. Barrette uses a two-piece operator on some models, and the small internal teeth are plastic. Once stripped, no amount of tightening helps; the operator needs replacement.
  • You have to lift or shoulder the patio door to lock it. The door has sagged, which usually comes back to a failed roller or a bent roller bracket. Forcing it wears the latch strike plate, and now you have two problems instead of one.
  • Condensation or fogging between the panes. That’s a failed seal on an insulated glass unit, and on older Barrette windows it means replacing the whole sash. On vinyl frames in Jacksonville, frame warping after seal failure is rare; replacing just the sash is a cost-effective fix when the frame is still square.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

An open living space after a whole-home remodel

Parts-and-labor pricing in Jacksonville for Barrette repairs runs like this, installed:

  • Window balance replacement (single sash): $120–$260 per sash
  • Casement window operator & handle: $180–$340 per window
  • Sliding patio door roller replacement (both rollers): $220–$450 per door
  • Patio door latch & handle set: $150–$300 per door
  • Insulated glass sash replacement: $350–$900 per sash, depending on size and whether it’s low-E

Every quote includes the part, the labor to install and adjust it, disposal of the old part, and cleanup of the work area. We write the price before we start, and it does not change mid-job. If the part we bring doesn’t match after we open everything up, we stop and tell you before ordering the right one — no surprise line items. The workmanship is covered under the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the part fails or the window doesn’t operate right within a year, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

For window balances and sash replacements, a homeowner with patience can handle a swap. But there are two places where DIY goes wrong, and we’re honest about this because we’ve fixed the aftermath. First, block-and-tackle balances are tensioned; releasing the old one the wrong way can snap the cord back toward your hand. Wear gloves and eye protection if you try it. Second, patio door rollers on older Barrette doors are often held in by screws that have corroded in place in Jacksonville’s coastal air. A stripped screw in the roller bracket turns a $30 part into a door that needs a new frame repair. If the door is binding, sagging, or the screws look rusted, call (904) 643-6243. We bring the right parts, shoe covers, and drop cloths, and we get it adjusted the same visit.
